Provide young people with the experience of both victory and defeat.
An integrated concept of education must include sport. Every pupil takes two kinds of sport, one of them a team sport. At the Schule Schloss Salem there are many school teams which regularly take part in big competitions. In the first place there is the traditional Salem hockey team, in addition there are basketball, volleyball and rowing teams. Further compulsory sports can be chosen from: badminton, soccer and rugby, running, aerobics and dance, apparatus gymnastics, golf, canoeing, track and field athletics, and also rowing and swimming. The new fitness room, climbing, tennis and sailing are also popular.
Besides the classic types of sporting disciplines the school offers a varied programme of outdoor activities. Canoeing expeditions at home and abroad, and mountaineering or skiing trips in the nearby Alps round off the programme. Outdoor activities are also possible in the framework of the one-week field trips. Some weekends in the school year are devoted to special outdoor events.
A special experience for Middle School pupils is the Outward Bound programme. These excursions teach the pupils not just to cope with tough physical challenges, but also to take responsibility for themselves, the group and the environment.
Outdoor activities continue in the Upper School, and are among the options for the week-long project trips (such as the outdoor camp in the foothills of the French Alps, for example). Canoeing expeditions at home and abroad and mountaineering or ski-ing trips in the nearby Alps complete the school’s sports programme. There are also weekends during the school year which are devoted to special outdoor events.
