Learning outside as well as inside the classroom

The boarding school format offers the rare opportunity to encourage learning outside the classroom in a variety of experience, play and exercise-based activities. Our goal is to enable pupils to set themselves high standards and focus on their own weak points.

The ability to guide pupils individually through their education depends on small classes in a manageably-sized school community. At the Hohenfels Castle Lower School for Years 5 to 7, there are currently five classes of 13 to 19 pupils – ideal conditions for promoting individual development.

In addition to academic subjects, self-directed learning (“SDL”) is also an important study component, seeking to enable children to work self-reliantly, effectively and economically. Foreign pupils can attend the integrated language school for German as a Foreign Language (GaF), which is tailored to their individual needs in order to ease the transition to the German school system.

The compulsory after-school homework and practice sessions are supervised by the mentors.

Special attention is paid to the subjects German, mathematics and foreign languages. According to the Hohenfels language model Year 5 pupils can choose the language combination English and Latin.

In addition, there are regular opportunities for practical projects, research and self-directed assignments designed to bring multidisciplinary study to life.

In the afternoons, the pupils take part in a wide range of after-school clubs.
